Associate Professor Dr. Christian-Alexander Behrendt (M.D., FESVS) is vascular and endovascular surgeon and senior clinical lecturer in vascular surgery. Dr. Behrendt is chief and head of the department of vascular and endovascular surgery, Asklepios Clinic Wandsbek, Asklepios Medical School, Hamburg, Germany. He is currently appointed the medical and scientific director of the German Institute for Vascular Research, Berlin, Germany. The German Institute for Vascular Research (DIGG gGmbH) is the scientific institute of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine with approximately 3300 members (2023). It was accredited by the European Commission as official research institution (PIC 885070390) and participates in international funding applications. Currently, more than 200 vascular centres in Germany are connected to the quality registry led by the institute.
Dr. Behrendt is fellow member of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS). He currently leads a research group at the Brandenburg Medical School Theodor-Fontane (MHB). His main interest in clinical care is lower extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and diabetic foot syndrome.
He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed original contributions and reviews (more than 70 of them as first or last author in highly-ranked scientific journals, 1st quartile in surgery, h-index >32). He is dedicated to the leading journal in vascular and endovascular surgery (European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, EJVES), where he serves as section editor for peripheral arteries.
Over the past 10 years, Dr. Behrendt became an expert in real world evidence research by using health insurance claims data and registries for both health services research and quality improvement. His main field of interest in research are abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, carotid artery stenosis treatment, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) treatment.
Dr. Behrendt is founding member and current co-chair of the International Consortium of Vascular Registries (ICVR). Before that, he was secretary (2017-2020) and chairman (2020-2023) of the VASCUNET committee, a cross-border network and committee of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) comprising 28 national and international quality improvement registries in vascular medicine. As director of the German chapter of the Medical Device Epidemiology Network (MDEpiNet), he is also involved in several coordinated registry networks (CRN) in cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Behrendt was principal investigator (PI) of several prior and ongoing registry studies and trials in Germany. Most recently, he led two large multistage multimethodological projects on the treatment of PAD in Germany (IDOMENEO, 01VSF16008, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03098290 and RABATT, 01VSF18035).
